San Leandro Officer Nels "Dan" Niemi, 42, was shot and killed on July 25, 2005, while investigating an excessive noise complaint near the intersection of Doolittle Drive and Belvedere Avenue.
While Niemi was talking to a person when two people drove up in a white 1995 Ford Thunderbird. The suspect got out of the card and reportedly fired six shots without warning at Niemi, who died about 30 minutes later at Eden Medical Center. Niemi was the first San Leandro police officer killed in the line of duty since 1961. He is survived by his wife Dionne, a six-year-old daughter and a 13-year-old stepson.
On the following day, July 26, 2005, the suspect, Newark resident Irving Alexander Ramirez, 23, was arrested without incident while he was sleeping in a Daly City apartment leased to his sister and her husband.

On Saturday, July 23, 2005, a mountain lion was reportedly seen near the 2800 block of Marineview Drive.
Police responding to the area observed paw tracks along the hillside, but did not spot the mountain lion.
Harold Gary, a 26-year-old from San Leandro, was killed after being shut numerous times late Friday night, July 8, 2005. He was found near the intersection of Foothill Blvd. and Seminary Ave. in Oakland.
Thai Satay will open at the former location of Strizzi's at 1376 E. 14th Street on July 7, 2005. The owners have a restaurant by the same name in San Mateo at 173 E 4th Ave. and the San Leandro restaurant will feature the same menu of items.
