Quiet FIrst Half of 2013 for San Leandro Campaign Activity

The latest financial statements from San Leandro's candidates showed little activity during the first half of 2013. San Leandro District 4 Councilmember Benny Lee reported the most activity, with campaign contributions totaling $850.

There are no campaign contribution limits in San Leandro, so individuals and businesses may contribute any amount of money to local campaigns. Contributors of $99 or less do not have to be listed by name, but candidates are required to report the source of any donation of $100 or more.

Semi-annual campaign statements for the period from January 1, 2013, to June 30, 2013, were due July 31, 2013, and are summarized below. Reports are not required for candidates that neither raised nor spent more than $1,000.

Benny Lee
District 4 Councilmember Benny Lee reported $765 in his campaign account at the end of the reporting period, with $20,729.46 in campaign debt, including $2,000 to his wife Rose Ng.

Lee reported the following contributions to his campaign:

  • $500 from Steve Song, owner of F.H. Dailey
  • $250 from Tom Silva of Eden Realty
  • $100 from Carl Basuino

Lee reported the following expenses:

  • $1,069.41 to PoliticalCalling.com for phone banks
  • $300 to former Mayor Tony Santos to pay back a loan
  • $257 to his wife Rose Ng to pay back a loan
  • $200 to Charlie Gilcrest for campaign consulting
  • $100 to to Careful Design for campaign literature.

Lee also reported that his campaign owes $4,800 to Charlie Gilcrest for campaign consulting and $2,860.05 to Autumn Press for campaign literature.

Stephen Cassidy
Cassidy reported no money in his campaign account at the end of the reporting period and no campaign contributions.

Cassidy's only expenses were a $250 contribution to the San Leandro Scholarship Foundation and a $533 transfer to a different campaign account.

Ursula Reed
District 2 Councilmember Ursula Reed's report did not include any information about money in her campaign account. Reed only contribution to her campaign was $500 from herself and her only expense was $500 to Next Generation for campaign consulting.

Pauline Cutter
District 5 Councilmember Pauline Cutter reported $931.65 in her campaign account and no campaign debt. Cutter reported a $50 payment to the California Secretary of State for office expenses.

Corina Lopez
Former District 5 City Council candidate Corina Lopez reported no money in her campaign account and outstanding debt of $22,861.

Jim Prola
District 6 Councilmember Jim Prola reported no money in his campaign account. The sole contribution to his campaign was $2,823.52 to forgive a loan he previously made to his campaign.

The next election for San Leandro City Council is November 4, 2014. Although the information is not yet posted on the City of San Leandro web site, the candidate nomination period for the November 4, 2014 election is expected to begin on July 14 and end on August 8, 2013.

Elections will be held for Districts 1, 3, 5, and for Mayor. Michael Gregory, who represents District 1 and Diana Souza, who represents District 3, will be termed out and cannot run for re-election. Pauline Cutter represents District 5 and Stephen Cassidy, the current Mayor, are both expected to run for re-election.
