Eight Applicants Vie for Appointment to the District 4 San Leandro City Council Seat

On the last day for applications for the District 4 San Leandro City Council seat appointment, five more people submitted applications, bringing the total to eight.

The applicants include candidates Chris Crow, Darlene Daevu, and Benny Lee. Other applicants for the appointment are Dana Chohlis, a teacher in the Lafayette School District, Planning Commissioner Thomas Dlugosh, David Erlich, who withdrew his candidacy for the District 4 election, former San Leandro Mayor John Faria, and former City of San Leandro employee Charles Kane.

Chohlis teaches fourth grade at Lafayette School and previously taught for nine years at McKinley Elementary. She is an officer (Port Captain) and past Commodore of the Alameda Yacht Club, where former San Leandro Chamber CEOs Heidi Benson [Finberg] and Diana Gentry are Social Directors.

Dlugosh has served on the Planning Commission since 2005 and is a member of the Sentinels, a group of local business people that function as a political action committee and contribute money to local political campaigns.

Erlich moved to San Leandro from Lancaster, where he ran unsuccessfully for the Republican Central Committee in 2010. He has spoken at a few recent City Council meetings.

Faria was the District 1 City Councilmember from 1986 until he was appointed Mayor in June 1993 after the death of Mayor Dave Karp. As part of the appointment, Faria reportedly agreed not to run for Mayor, but changed his mind and finished third in the 1994 Mayoral race. Faria also unsuccessfully ran for the Oro Loma Sanitary District Board in 2006 and is a member of the Sentinels.

Kane has served on the Recreation and Parks Commission since 2011. He worked for the City of San Leandro for 35 years, including with the San Leandro Police Department for 28 years and is now retired.

The appointment to the District 4 City Council sear will be for a maximum of three and a half months, until December 31, 2012.

The City Council seat was vacated by Joyce Starosciak when she resigned on August 1, 2012. The City Charter mandates that the vacancy be filled by an appointment within 60 days.

I have known John Faria for many years and I think he would do an outstanding job! Good Luck John! You have my vote!
