San Leandro School Board trustee Hermy Almonte announced on Friday that he will run against incumbent San Leandro City Councilmember Jim Prola for the District 6 City Council seat. Almonte pulled papers with the San Leandro City Clerk on Friday, indicating his intention to run. In his announcement on Facebook, Almonte wrote, “I am running for city council because there are community and public needs that have to be addressed.”

Almonte was elected to the Area 1 seat of the San Leandro School Board in 2008, defeating incumbent Rick Richards. Earlier in 2008, Almonte had an unsuccessful run for the District 6 City Council seat, in a race that included Jim Prola and three other candidates. Prola received nearly 58% of the vote, avoiding a run-off election.

Prola pulled papers to run for re-election on July 16, 2012. The deadline for filing is August 10, 2012, and will not be extended since Prola, the incumbent, is running.

The election will be held on November 6, 2012. The City Council seats for Districts 2, 4, and 6 are up for election. The last day to register to vote is October 22, 2012.
