On Wednesday April 4, 2012, 14 new bicycle racks like the one shown here were installed on East 14th Street and Washington Avenue in the downtown area of San Leandro. Three similar bike racks were installed near City Hall late last year.

According to City of San Leandro Senior Transportation Engineer Reh-Lin Chen, two more bicycle racks near the downtown Wells Fargo have been put on hold until construction of the Estudillo parking garage is completed.

San Leandro Councilmember Michael Gregory, often seen biking around San Leandro, said he was pleased to have the bike racks installed, but would also like to see more "mini-parks" like the one in front of Allphin Jewelers that includes a bike rack.

The San Leandro Downtown Association is sponsoring Bike SL 2012 on Sunday May 6, 2012. Participants can choose from a challenging 13-mile ride around Lake Chabot with Councilmember Gregory that starts at 10:30am or a family-friendly 5-mile bike ride through San Leandro that starts at noon.

Bike-to-work day is scheduled for May 10, 2012, and the City of San Leandro Engineering and Transportation Department will host an "Energizer Station" at the entrance to the San Leandro BART station from 7 to 9am.
