I really hate to say this, but San Leandro does feel like it is slipping slowly downhill due to some of the behavioral and lifestyle issues of the young ghetto men that come in to town to shop, live and hang out - many of these young men come without any regard for other lifestyles and with out concern or respect for any human being, creating fear in the middle class and elderly populations of all races.
A sad reality of life in urban America, is that a significant portion of young ghetto guys have crime and behavior issues that make that sub culture un-welcome and scary to middle class people of all races, it really has nothing to do with skin color but is due to social issues, education and economics. The sub culture of the ghetto heavily impact crime, schools and other quality of life issues and then drive out those that can afford more "suburban", safer surroundings for their children.
Wish it was not so, but it is. I don't know what the answers are, but until the issues are vented very openly without fear and with total candor on both sides, we will silently avoid the issues as a nation. It really is not a black, white, or brown issue but a ghetto sub culture issue. I love diversity and would never live in an area that was not racially diverse, but the problems caused by the sub group of mostly young men is not fixed and the fact that every one fears discussing the issues and problems created, creates fear and prejudice all over again - on all sides. A tiresome circle that repeats, over and over again, with no resolution.
