In an op-ed piece in the November 22, 2005, edition of the San Francisco Chronicle entitled Ultimate justice for cop killers, Dionne Niemi speaks out in favor of the death penalty. She is the widow of San Leandro police officer Nels Niemi, 42, who was killed on July 25, 2005. The man suspected of shooting Niemi, Irving Alexander Ramirez, faces the death penalty.
